The information below might be to the interest of cyclists looking for a good chain lube.

Over the past four years we have used many different chain lubes.

Lube with teflon, dry lube, wet lube, ceramic lube, chain oil, name it, we have tried them all.

Our chains continued to collect dirt over a period of time, reducing the lifespan of the chain.

Some lubricants became so messy, that just by the slightest touch of the chain you would end-up with a dirty mark of black grease/oil on you calf.

We needed to clean our chain and cassette regularly.

In other words we were never really satisfied.

Five months ago while being in the Netherlands, a bike shop recommended "Squirt", a long lasting wax based dry lube.

www.squirtlube.com

According to the sales person the "best" lube on the market.

We decided to give it a try.

I can tell you, this wax based dry lube is amazing!!

We pedaled 3500km on different road conditions, and have never cleaned our chains and cassette.

The chain runs smoothly, the shifting is perfect and the lube last longer.

We apply a coating of Squirt three times a week on the inside of the chain.

Squirt dry lube does not contain harmful solvents and is environmentally friendly, we like that!!

Satisfied?

Very!!

What, no responses? Chain lube is one of those "religious" topics that usually generates about a hundred anecdotes.

Well, I just spray the whole thing with WD-40 and hope for the best. Yes, it's heresy but there you have it.

That said, I would suggest that, if possible, the "subject" of this review be changed to the brand name of the lubricant.

I've been riding long enough to have seen many "new and improved" chain lubes come and go. I have yet to see the perfect solution. The various "dry" lubes tend to require frequent application, and the various "wet" lubes act as dirt magnets and often leave a mark on your calf or your clothing. Still, the bottom line is any lube is better than no lube.

When cleaning my chain, I still use the "old school" method. I remove the chain from the bike, put it in a pan with about an inch of gasoline, and brush the crud away. Then I put the chain in a bucket of warm soapy water to remove the residual gasoline. Finally, after a good clean water rinsing, I put the chain on a cookie sheet and bake it in the oven for about 15 minutes to evaporate all of the moisture. Then, it's ready to go back on the bike.

Lately I've been using a Teflon based dry lube from Finish Line. It does well in repelling dirt, it doesn't tattoo your leg severely, but it's not waterproof. You'll have to re-apply it after riding in the rain or washing your bike.

A lot of folks like the T-9 Boeshield. I haven't used it in perhaps 20 years, but I seem to recall that it made my chain sticky. It used to come as an aerosol spray, but I see the newer stuff is just a liquid. Maybe the stickiness was the result of the aerosol propellent.

Another reasonably happier user of Squirt here as well for similar reasons as given above. However, I find that it washes out very quickly in the rain and note that the long term testing of it over at the MTBR forums reported a similar experience.

So for me great in dry dusty conditions, not so great in wet conditions.

Andrew

Hi Andrew.
Have to say we have had only a few days of wet conditions in the past 5 months.
Squirt performed well, indeed we re-applied a new coating but we needed to do this with all other brands we used in the past.
Thanks for your comment.
Michael, Italia.

Indeed Don the Teflon doesn't perform well in wet conditions.

I have been using this for awhile now, and rate it very hightly.

It's great and keeps the chain running smoothly.

Every other month, I alway take my chain off and soak it in lemon juice, get all the crap and mud off and soak it in lemon juice again for as long as possible.

In between the deep cleans, I would always use Squirt. It's the only one I use now after trying loads of different ones on the market.

It gets my vote!!!

Lemon juice in soapy water is great for cleaning your bike all over, but great for degreasing chain/cogs etc, etc.
The more grease, the more lemon juice ratio for me.

Also, lemon juice with a toothbrush or scrubber is great for removing bits of rust on your chain or other bike parts.

It's a hell of a lot cheaper that using the expensive degreasers which I have used in the past.

I'm a fan for this stuff in the dry and dusty conditions I ride in. I do get a bit of build up of wax if I over lube as the manufacturers suggest but it soon falls off.

Stops the squeaks for the most part, or was that my Brooks Flyer springs?

I recently completed my long tail touring bike and with 9 feet of drive chain rolling around between cassette and ring Im definitely interested in a better solution than the wet lube I've been using.

Thanks for the recommend.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NEVER USE WD40 on a chain
IT IS A SOLVENT AND HAS NO >>>>> NONE >>>>>> ZIP >>>>>> NIKS
OIL OR LUBRICATING PROPRETTES .
If you dont believe me read their web page it is a solvent and moisture barrier ONLY

I agree do not use WD40. I use White Lightening only when chain is dried out and dirty. I do not remove chain and use the Park chain mate/cleaner to degrease the chain before lubricating. I used to use WD40 and chain life/freewheel life (in old times) was short. Since White Lightening and mentioned cleaning method I have almost 14,000 miles on current chain/cassette. Since the Park chain mate captures the citrus degrease liquid the cost is minimal.

I agree that using WD40 to lube chains is not good, however your statement is wrong.

From the FAQ section of the wd40.com website:

How is the WD-40 Specialist line of products different from the original WD-40 Multi-Use Product?

WD-40 Multi-Use Product was invented in 1953 with five basic functions: It Lubricates, Penetrates, Protects, Removes, and Displaces Moisture. WD-40 Specialist is a new line of specialty maintenance products designed to meet specific needs of professional users. What does WD-40 Multi-Use Product do?

WD-40 Multi-Use Product fulfills five basic functions:
1. LUBRICATES: The product's lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and tenaciously held to all moving parts.
2. PENETRATES: WD-40 Multi-Use Product loosens rust-to-metal bonds and frees stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts.
3. PROTECTS: The product protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements.
4. REMOVES: WD-40 Multi-Use Product gets under dirt, grime and grease. Use it to remove gunk from tools, equipment and vehicles. WD-40 Multi-Use Product in liquid form (e.g., gallon) also dissolves adhesives, allowing easy removal of excess bonding material.
5. DISPLACES MOISTURE: Because it displaces moisture, WD-40 Multi-Use Product quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits.

I was introduced to WD-40 in the 70's when I worked in a foundry. The molds they used would invariably become clogged with the resin used for the cores (I'll explain if you wish), and it became impossible to remove them, so say nothing of the 650 degrees F. that they operated at.
Anyway, one of the mechanics walked up to this molding machine, and sprayed the bolts with this stuff in a blue can, after nobody else could free the bolts holding the mold in place.
LOTS of white smoke! And in a moment, the bolts "turned out" freely. Cleaned and lubed all the bolts in one step. I've used WD-40 as a lube, a cleaner, and a rust preventive. It's wonderful stuff, and it IS a good light oil, but it's not good for chains--as I have found out multiple times. If I were to use a wet lube, it would probably be Triflow, which incorporates PTFE in a light oil base. That works great, but it's beyond messy. For now, I'm using Squirtlube, and so far quite happy with it.

Two days ago I had to do some maintenance to our bikes after nearly 4 months in storage.
The European winter is over and soon we will leave our winter-stop in Florence.
There was no need to clean our chain just lube was needed.
Amazing!
