#1: Stockpile : Share. Contribute. Explore. (thread)
By Michael Ambs on Thu 25 Jun 2009 07:38 PDT Edit
Hello everyone :)

My name is Mike. I wanted to say "hi" and introduce myself before posting about our project - in 2001 I took a bicycle trip across the country (US), it took 55 days and over 4,000 miles. The experience left an impression on me that was more powerful than anything I'd ever been through. It changed me.

We (myself and Amanda, my film-making partner) have spent the last 6 years working on this film - and currently we are editing the footage we filmed two summers ago, while following Larry McKurtis. It's been an overwhelming process, and we are excited to have come so far with so little.

So, having said that, here is some info about an outreach campaign that we're pushing to allow other travelers to be a part of the film (if you'd like to watch a few teasers first, to see if it's your thing, you can so here).

For Thousands of Miles is an upcoming feature-length documentary that focuses on the concept of individuals being connected via the places they've visited by bicycle.

Stockpile is an element of our feature film, an outreach campaign to collect a pool of raw media from other travelers and with it, help visually express that our experiences on the road are intertwined in ways we often overlook.

Click here to watch our 60 second promo video about Stockpile

All you need to do to be a part of For Thousands of Miles is upload any pictures or videos to Stockpile (in doing so you're granting us permission to include those materials in the film under a Creative Commons license).

Step 1 Decide which clips you'd like to share! - It can be one clip that's very special to you, or a whole memory-card's worth of great bicycle trip footage.

Step 2 Next Upload your clip(s) to Vimeo! - We feel it's the best video sharing site around! Not to mention they have a really active and supportive bicycling community.

Step 3 Then add your video(s) to our group! - That's it! Feel free to look around, comment on other rider's videos, and make a few friends.

If you have any questions about anything or would just like to introduce yourself, you can contact us at info [at] projectpedal.com. Thank you!

Hi Mike

Sounds a good project. But which country? USA? Canada? Australia?

happy days

Hey Léo :) Thanks for checking out the project, and for the question. We're looking for contributors from any and everywhere!

The rider, Larry, that we followed took the northern ACA route, and some of the early Stockpile members have submitted footage taken in the exact same places we were at.

Cascades National Park for example... and we can use those shots specifically together, but any other footage will be used to make other points about traveling by bike.

Hope to see you on Stockpile! Ride on.

Hey Mike,

I did some surfing through your great teasers and also spotted one of your replies to a poster:

'Glad you like it :) This shot goes on for quite a while... I'm sure it's boring to most anyone else, but I could watch it all day... '

I have a good feeling about the project. It looks like the personal essence of the moments will come through. Teaser number two shows, to me anyways, how profound it is to be insignificant. Good luck on the project.

hey Michael :) Thanks for watching our teasers! I'm very flattered - especially that you have a good feeling about we're trying to do.

My goal is exactly that, this film is a very, very personal project to me... and it won't speak to everyone, but those who've traveled (or who would love to travel) will hopefully find many things they can take away from the film.

Teaser 002 is a favorite of mine, thanks for pointing that one out (if anyone wants to watch it, you can do so here).

We tried to capture most of the footage in a way that does suggest the kind of insignificance you feel when riding... it's humbling, but somehow empowering at the same time. And it's an important point to get across in how we 'show' Larry's trip.

Thanks again - and we hope to see you on the production blog! :)

Just wanted to say thanks to all the new people who've have been dropping by Stockpile and asking questions about our project! We've been in contact with two great guys who are currently riding along the pacific coast - they've been uploading a ton of new footage to Stockpile from the road, drop by and let them know we're out here cheering them on! Thanks for all the support!
