Going Rideabout
By Kent Wenger - (contact)

Kranjska Gora to Bovec, Slovenia (with a tiny bit of Austria): Vrsic and the Soca River valley

Friday August 17, 2012, 61 km (38 miles) - Total so far: 3,587 km (2,229 miles)

Today I rode from Kranjska Gora, to Bovec, Slovenia via the Vrsic pass, with a side excursion to Austria from Kranjska Gora. The Vrsic pass was pretty hard – overall it's not super-steep, but most of the elevation gain is packed into the last part – about 500 meters in the last 4 km, so that's obviously steeper than 10%, and I read somewhere that some sections are 18%. Before I rode to Vrsic and then Bovec, I went up a smaller pass to the northwest of Kranjska Gora, mainly just to be able to say that I got into Austria. It was actually pretty hard in parts, too, but only about 270 m elevation gain instead of 800.

On the way up the Vrsic pass, I met a couple from Vermont who are bike touring also. They said they actually know a few people in Madison, but I don't know any of the people they named.

There must have been some kind of VW club outing or something, because on the way up the pass I got passed by a whole bunch of old Beetles and a few of the old vans. One of the funny thing about the old (air-cooled) VWs is that, until they're pretty close to you, they sound a lot like a motorcycle, so it's hard to tell that it's a car instead of a motorcycle.

There were lots of people on motorcycles, also – that's clearly a big activity here. The ascent had lots of tight hairpins, so the cars were really getting in the way of the motorcycles, and sometimes the motorcyclists were clearly getting upset about that. Fortunately everybody was pretty tolerant of the bikes. Of course, the cars got in my way on the way down, even though the side I descended wasn't as technical as the side I went up. A lot of times I don't like to stop on descents, but this time I did stop several times, partly to take photos, partly to let my rims cool, and partly because of catching up to batches of cars but not being able to pass them without taking too much risk.

I think I did the ascent of Vrsic (800 m elevation gain) in about 1:45 actual riding time (the total time was much longer than that, because I stopped for a snack, and made lots of photo stops). Just shows how much carrying extra weight (and less fitness) slows you down – in 2004 in the Alps, I think I did the Madeleine (about 1500 m elevation gain) in about 1:50 riding time...

The side of Vrsic I descended (the south side) was really beautiful – I think the north side didn't have quite such good views, partly because of having the views blocked more by trees. But in the evening at my hotel, I met a couple who said that the Mangart pass is much more beautiful than Vrsic. They were trying to convince me to stay another night at the hotel and just do an out-and-back ride to Mangart tomorrow. I was really tempted, but in the end I decided that I had better get my butt to Croatia ASAP. (Mangart is quite a bit higher than Vrsic – 2000+ meters rather than 1600.)

Several people told me that the WW I museum in Bovec is really good, but I didn't get to town until about 6pm, so it was too late to see that, unfortunately. The hotel I stayed at had a wellness center, so I decided to pamper myself with a massage. The thing is, of course, you have no idea how good the person will be. But this time I lucked out – the massage therapist was really good, so I was happy with that.

The hotel had buffet dinner for six Euros, which is a pretty good deal for hungry cyclists...

There were lots of hairpins with cobbles -- when the inside of the hairpin was on the uphill side of the road, it was pretty darn hard.
