HOMESCHOOLING OUR KIDS WHILE TRAVELlNG.

Monday December 29, 2008

We have a lot of people asking us how we educate our children while traveling.

Jesse (12) and Sammy (10) have been home-schooled for the last five years and

follow the Australian curriculum.

In the past they followed their education through the Cairns school of

distance.

Travelling on a bicycle made it hard to stay connected with their school,

as mailing became an issue.

We had some professional advise and decided to teach the boys without school

supervision.

Since we have left Australia we carry all the necessary books/software to

educate our children.

Jesse and Sammy keep a journal which has become a beautiful bookwork.

They read daily and on their "days off" cycling they do their Maths, English

and Grammar lessons.

Biology, Geology, History and Languages are to be found on the road.

We discuss all subjects and if more research is needed the laptop kicks-in.

Thanks to Google and Wikipedia the information needed is available at the

touch of a button.

The kids are now learning Spanish.

This will be their third language as they were brought up bilingual and

already speak English and Dutch.

We as parents feel that Jesse and Sammy are developing in a very positive way.

Travelling is the best education they can get, it opens their eyes to the

world around them.

They experience different cultures, religions and habits.

The boys have learned to respect different views, lifestyles and adapt easily

to the circumstances around them.

This is all thanks to our lifestyle.

A nice example was two days before Christmas.

We were walking on one of the markets when the boys spotted some Red Eared

Slider Turtles.

They told us that they never had a pet in their life and we ended up buying

two turtles under the condition we could only keep them for the time

we're in San Cristobal.

Over the past 13 days they have observed, researched and looked after their

turtles.

Wikipedia became a helpful tool and two pages were filled in their journal.

As a result Biology lessons were covered in San Cristobal de Las Casas.

We hope this information has given the readers who are interested in the

schooling of our boys a better inside view.

They love the freedom and flexibility of their lessons.

According to Jesse and Sammy there is no better school than homeschooling!
