Two Grads and a Dad on Tour
By Pete Staehling, Erica Staehling and Lauren Varboncoeur - (contact)

A Trip is Born: (Pete)

Wednesday May 2, 2007

I was planning to do a bike tour this Summer already, but my daughter Erica said she might have some time to take a trip with me between her graduation and grad school. She said it was likely to be for a month. At that point I just started to keep my options open.

I was very pleasantly surprised when Erica asked if I was interested in biking coast to coast. This had been a dream of mine since 1976, but I thought it would probably be after I was retired. She said her friend Lauren might also be interested and the planning started from there.

We are allowing 12 weeks but would like to finish a little quicker if we can. We have been reading other folks journals, pouring over equipment lists and maps, and figuring out which bikes to use.

I had 8-1/2 weeks vacation saved up and I asked my employer about taking some additional time without pay. I was pleasantly surprised to find them to be pretty supportive. There are some complications if I take more than 4 weeks without pay, but that still allows 12-1/2 weeks. I think we can finish before that. I was somewhat concerned that I might need need to go job shopping when I got back, but my boss assures me that is not the case.

My wife Susan has also been very supportive, as always. This is admirable since she is the one stuck taking care of the dog, bird, turtle, and fish as well as making sure the bills are paid, mailing us stuff, and dealing with all kinds of other logistical stuff. She will fly out and rent a car to spend some time with us somewhere along the way, maybe at Yellowstone.

I had already been training for some time since I was planning a different trip before this opportunity came up. Erica and Lauren had not been riding so I rushed a couple bikes up to them at Bucknell so they could get started training. Erica says the riding is great there and she wishes she had been riding there for the last four years rather than discovering the area roads now, just weeks before graduation.

Erica needed a new bike so I decided to buy her a Windsor Tourist for a graduation present. I was impressed enough with her new bike that I ordered one for myself.
