Muar to Kluang (Malaysia): A Pretty Bad Ride

Thursday April 3, 2014, 66 miles (106 km) - Total so far: 1,609 miles (2,589 km)

Today was the last day that Geoff and I would cycle together. Our paths would diverge the following day. Having had a travel companion for the past few days had been a pleasant experience.

We started out with a roti breakfast opposite our hotel. We took off at 7:45am and followed road #24. #24 was not so bad once we had left Muar. Traffic was tolerable and the scenery was palm oil plantations, rollings hills and mountains in the background. Traffic became increasingly heavier as we got closer to Highway # E2, the major North-South connection in Malaysia. I was hoping that traffic would get lighter at mile 52, when we turned onto road#50 and away from E2 - negative!  Traffic remained heavy with cars and trucks whizzing by. We made a lot of stops on the way, took time for coffee, shakes or fresh watermelon.  In this way, we made an unpleasant ride much more enjoyable.

We checked into the White House Hotel in Kluang at RM50/night for air conditioned rooms and bad wifi. But otherwise it was fine. When walking around town later, I noticed a disproportionate number budget hotels for a town of this size. I wondered why.

Kluang became quite lively in the evening.  It had a number of coffee shops, bakeries and stores that were open until 9pm. Geoff and I had dinner and a few cold beers at a lively outdoors hawker center. The night was cool and pleasant so that we stayed out longer than usual.

This ride was one of the less pleasant ones; traffic was mostly heavy
