Alpentour 2013
By Durrin Hynes - (contact)

day 17: Innsbruck-Kühtai-Bielerhöhe

Tuesday July 30, 2013, 136 km (85 miles) - Total so far: 1,931 km (1,200 miles)

I had an ambitious plan today: to ride both of the remaining passes on the schedule. First up: Kühtai saddle. I figured if I could get to the top of this by noon I would have time to ride Bielerhöhe also. Everything started fine: I got going at 7.30, found a way to the Kühtai road without losing too much elevation, and rode the brutal 14-16% ramps up Kühtai with a decent speed. I got to the top at 11.15 or so.

I then descended to Ötztal, to continue towards Landeck, and up the Silvretta Alpine road. At Imst, I screwed up, trying to take a shortcut, but forgetting that the area is 3-dimensional (as Leo says), and ended up with an extra 150m climb on the way to Landeck.

just look at all those consonants in this towns name! It is presumably a ski-town, as there were more hotels than anything else.

I wasn't sure what Preiselbeer were at the time. It turns out they are lingonberries, or cowberries.

From Landeck, I started up the Paznaun valley towards Bielerhöhe, and there was a nasty headwind. It wasn't very steep, in fact after slogging along for several hours, I started to despair of making Bielerhöhe today, as at around 18.30, my altimeter said 1400m (Bielerhöhe is a little over 2000m), and the headwind was not helping. But when I was resting at a bus stop, I noticed on the ski map poster there, that a town I had passed quite a while ago was 1454m! Apparently, my altimeter had neglected to "credit" me with about 200m! So I was only missing 400m, not as much of a problem. I shopped for breakfast, in case I wild camped, and got going.

When I got past the toll gate for the Silvretta High Alpine Road, it was really beautiful, and very little traffic. Suddenly I didn't care about going fast. I just rolled along, taking a lot of pictures, and arriving at the pass, didn't really want to leave. So I rode up a footpath and found a nice place to camp at 2065m.
