One Mountain Pass Too Far

Unreliable internet tonight will try to up date tomorrow as I pass through Omak, WA.

I have had unbelievable good luck so far, so many nice people out there, need to stop watching the 24/7 news cycle that highlights all the bad in people!

First of all I'm not supposed to be in Wauconda. I had planned a stop in Republic but there was no room in the inn let alone in the campgrounds. People weren't especially helpful either, I guess with the county fair going on they had a lot going on already...

So after giving up on Republic I pressed on...OK, but back to Kettle Falls. I had a wonderful evening with Marty and Willie, I am so very thankful for their hospitality.

Marty & Willie

Leaving Marty and Willie after a light breakfast I cruised down the road for 4 miles and then the fun began. Climbing to Sherman Pass took 3 hours and 28 minutes and 42 seconds of steady pedaling, it was never steep but it was continuous. The climb was 24.7 miles long with 4312' of vertical from alongside Lake Rooseveldt.

The bike taking a rest at the top. Sure am glad that Marty helped me fix that rear tire leak!

Taken just below the summit, found a rest room had to stop...my wife will say, "where did he get that jersey?". I'll never tell.

Nice roads leading into republic

Got to Republic and things were hopping due to the county fair going on at the fairgrounds I had hoped to camp at. I inquired within and they couldn't squeeze my tent in, the hotels were full too, so I was off to Wauconda which is not too far away. Only missed one thing on the map it included another mountain pass. I knew I was to be punished for the nice descent into Republic.

One pass too far

So I ride into Wauconda and stop at the Wauconda Cafe & Store (est 1898) and it kinda looked like it. Stuck my head in the door and found out the cafe was closed and there was a woman with a paint brush in hand painting the walls. That woman was Maddie, she and her husband Neal are the new owners of the cafe/store and are in the process of renovations. She welcomed me in, heard of my predicament and promptly suggested I set my tent up out back, use the facilities if needed, and by the way we have WiFi.

Things got even better, even though the cafe was closed, she made me dinner. Life is good!
