MY STORY: How this silly idea came to be.

Saturday May 12, 2012

Passions. Where do they come from? Remember the 1st time you saw your partner for life (the first one anyway)? A musical act or a car you just could not live without? I remember all of these and I also remember the first time years ago reading an article about a guy riding his bike from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast. I was blown away! I saved it and showed it to my friends. Where I saw adventure, mystery, future friends and the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles, my friends saw it as ridiculous and dangerous. Regardless, I was hooked. The most memorable vacations/trips always involve physical activity, both good and bad. I've flown many places in my life, rented a car, saw the sights and went home. You know what? I hardly remember any of them! I remember the stifling heat as my wife and I hiked the Grand Canyon. I remember my brothers and I climbing the mountains of The Burren in Ireland. I remember boating the winding jungle rivers of Belize in order to get to Mayan ruins. I remember my car dying on Interstate 10 after having 10 Hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans and using our wits to get to a Florida motel 200 miles away overnight..but normal vacations? I forget them all....but there was a problem. For 15 years, my wife Frankie and I have owned Conroy's Pub, a fairly popular mom and pop Irish establishment with a banquet room where, to make ends meet, we have to work tons of hours each week. I also write a weekly trivia show on PowerPoint to keep customers coming through the door. With these responsibilities, I just could not leave for a month and leave all the work for her. I was going to have to wait until the time was right. Then I got the "JUST DO IT" nudge I needed. My friend and fellow bar owner Curt Melzer (see his story on crazyguyonabike.com) visited and told me of his tour from Wichita to Seattle. That was all I needed. My wife and i have a fire pit in our back yard where we love to talk and have a few beers at night. The next day I told her, "Honey, I'm 54 years old. I've got to do this before I physically can't. Let me go for 3-4 weeks and when I get back, I'll work all of your shifts so you can be gone 3-4 weeks, visit your friends or something." What was her answer? "I want to go to!" "What about all of the scheduling?" "I'll work it out." "But we can't afford it" "I know. Let's just do it anyway1" Wow, problem solved. It's actually going to happen. Let's get to work.
