West of DC: A Bike, a Train, a Goal of Astoria, OR.
By Gale Hess - (contact)

L.A.

Sunday July 31, 2011

Redondo beach was good, a little chill to surf sans suit. Will Rogers/Santa Monica beach was a pleasant day too. We enjoyed exploring the 3rd street Promenade and ate at Wolfgang Puck To Go and Jiraffe, a restaurant owned by former surfers. Enjoyed some nice jazz on the Promenade and watched a few other performers. More like American Idol than Europe's street performance scene. I enjoyed two bike rides in L.A., one up Topanga canyon near Santa Monica and the other just in Harbor City (Long Beach area) on PCH and other local roads.

Spanish female artist to the court, La Roldana's, St. Gines. c 1692. I spent an hour with this Saintly man and he did little to alter his reputation. There is an entire room dedicated to the art of polychrome which in this case, included use of pigment derived from female cochneal bugs brought to Spain from Mexico. I was amused to find my Powerade on the flight home to PA contained the coloring agent, "cochneal." No mention of the bug juice aspect.

Joan Miro de Espana.

Dawn seemed to enjoy our visit and we certainly did and had a great time with cousins J and Val and little Alex.

No day at the Getty is complete without a trip to wipe out La Esperanza panaderia baby. I also ordered tamales for supper which we took home and enjoyed around the table.

Shopping, shopping for desert. Tres Leches, nice.
Check the typed yellow sign. They were friendly and laughed at me taking all pictures.

The Mexican whoopie pie equivalent makes no claim as the original but is tasty.

Getty walking path with stream. Running water encounters several obstacle types which are sequenced to allow varying sounds as progress is made through different areas of the park. Serene.
