Day 71 Mineral - Glendale: Happy Birthday Mum

Sunday July 25, 2010, 75 miles (121 km) - Total so far: 4,380 miles (7,049 km)

On road at 6 30 am after oats and peaches for breakfast. It's my Mum's 91st birthday. I hope she is comfortable.
I decided to take a short cut along Highway 618 through to Bumpass and on my way to Ashland. It meant I probably missed some nice country around Lake Anna but I was focussed on Yorktown. I managed to muck up one turn off which cost me about 3 miles of back tracking but it was really nice country and an ideal riding day - if a little hot. In the end I probably only saved a couple of miles. I was in Ashland by 9 30 and it was 93 degrees.

Riding out of Ashland

I had a real breakfast there - bagel, ham steak followed by coffee and a cinamon bun and lemon tart in a very busy cafe. There was free internet there so I had a chance to check emails - Ken is good for the pick up which is great, it wil be neat to hear about his trip on the Katy and just have time to reflect on our ride together. I took the opportunity to ride about 4 miles off route again into the big Mall shopping area beyond the I/State 95 to replace the phone charger I had left behind at the camping pavillion at Vesuvius. I also bought a 2 GB camera card. I was impressed with the product range of The Shack. It was a bit of a detour - probably 8 miles but it is good to have a charger again so I can text home. I then got on the bike again and rode another 14 miles to Mechanicsville where I had another small snack and drink. I met a young couple as I rode out of Mechanicsville who were riding Yorktown to San Francisco.

Cycle lane - Mechanicsville I think?

It was so great to see young Americans striking out and discoverying their country so young while also taking on the physical challenge, it will live with them all their lives. I told them about my previous weeks accommodation stops and wished them well. Had another drink at the service station before Elco and a quick chat to the owner and a few locals who were sitting inside out of the heat of the day - they had seen riders ride by but only had a scant appreciation of the Trans Am and the numbers that ride it. It was over a 100 degrees and they could not believe I was out riding 70 plus miles. I rode on to the store at Glendale bought a pint of ice cream and a cold drink which I placed in my pannier and then rode the past another Closed Road sign on the road to the Willis Church. I took my standard approach and rode on.

Willis Church - home for tonight

On arrival I sat at a table in the sun enjoying the drink and ice cream and 10 minutes later was joined by the lady who looks after bikers wishing to use the church for overnight accommodation. She let me into the church which was lovely and cool. There were no showers but I had a good body wash in the clean facilities and then just relaxed inmy dry casuals. Around 6 pm I gingerly eased myself back on the saddle and went back to the service station and bought a pizza and a couple of beers. I could not drink at the church so stopped at a park down the road and sat in the early evening warmth and enjoyed my supper as the shadows grew long and the dappled sun went down behind the trees.
I then rode back and hunkered down for my last evening before Yorktown. I was feeling pretty relieved and pretty pleased but also very focussed - I just wanted to get to the end of the ride.
