On the left, just past the Bretton Woods Ski Area, off to the left is the Mount Washington Hotel, one of the last few remaining Grand Hotels from the late 1800's and early 1900's. It looks like a cruise ship anchored 3/4 miles from the highway with it's winding driveway with antique light poles. Along with the Mountain View in Whitefield, NH and the Balsams in Dixville Notch to the north, these are the only three surviving large Grand Hotels left in Northern New Hampshire. There are still some "smaller" hotels around like the Wentworth and Eagle Mountain House in Jackson... but the Mount Washington Pictured here is a grand old lady, if you go by here, roll down the driveway and stroll onto it's huge veranda, and peek into the grand ballrooms... it was here in the 40's that the American Dollar was designated as the world currency.
