Bio: I am a 62 year old who is interested in bicycle touring, trail running, rowing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and backpacking among other things.

I dreamed of a Trans America tour since 1976. It was awesome that Erica, Lauren, and I were able to do the trip in 2007. It was a wonderful experience in many more ways than I can list. I feel so fortunate to have done this trip. It was a great route, I was accompanied by the best traveling partners, and we met wonderful folks along the way. It is hard to beat that!

In 2008 I was unable to ride comfortably for long distances due to a bike/car accident and I took up running. I now actually run a lot more than I ride, mostly on trails and mostly with my dog who loves the trails as much or more than I do.

In my subsequent tours, I have been pursuing lighter and lighter touring to the extent that I now consider my last trip (Southern Tier) to be ultralight with 14 pounds of gear and a 24 pound bike. The 24 pound includes bike, pump, tools, spares, rack, and empty water bottles.

I left the old Cannondale Criterium bike in Florida after the ST tour so I would have a bike to use when I visit my daughter. As a result I am having fun setting up another 1990 Cannondale for touring. This one is a road race model.

I retired from full time employment December 31, 2012 and am working two days a week until the end of June. At that point I expect to be fully retired. I plan to celebrate retirement with a car trip visiting some state high points and acclimating to the altitude on the way to a John Muir Trail through hike starting August 2nd 2013. The link to that trip does not appear in the list below because it is in the hiking topic. If interested in it check out http://hiking.topicwise.com/doc/Celebrating

My latest project. Still a work in progress. The goal is to come in at a similar all up bike and gear weight under 10 pounds.

My ultralight rig (14 pounds of gear including full camping and cooking gear). This bike now lives in Florida for when I visit my daughter Erica. Hopefully it will get some use riding with Erica and Ryan, maybe even riding the Florida portion of the ST some day.
