My passion is sailing, but I have always been fascinated by the efficiency of the bicycle and I have done some long distance cycling. Two of these past excursions had me treking from New Orleans to Miami and San Francisco to Orange County, CA; but that was some time ago. My renewed cycling interest was actually sparked through last summer's odyssey; when I solo-sailed my 40 ft. cutter rigged sloop 'Intrepid', from Long Beach, CA to Canada and back. Oh, and I did this without ever leaving home! That's because my boat IS my home; where I have lived aboard, these past 19 years. At any rate, I carry a small collapsible bicycle on board, which I rode in each port where I docked. One lovely day, while I was peddling this tiny Dahon cycling machine on San Juan Island in Washington, straining to get up each little hill, I saw several cyclists smoothly moving along and passing easily by me. I thought then how much more fun it would be to cycle on this beautiful island if I had a more efficient bicycle. It was then that I began to consider a bicycling vacation. I'm now in the senior citizen catagory, collecting Social Security and all. But, I still have my teenage mind set. The advantage at this stage in my life, is that my son Jeff runs the 'store', which allows me more free time. Thus, I can now realize some of my many teenage fantasies; i.e.: 'Some day I'm going to peddle a bicycle across America.' On Wednesday, June 5th, I will begin to peddle a loaded-down bicycle, every day, for 3-1/2 months! My trip begins in Anacortes, WA and will cross the USA, at near its widest point, to Bar Harbor, ME. I will then turn south west and cycle onto Washington, DC.
Waving goodbye to my Long Beach, CA friends; beginnig my '06 voyage to Canada.
