Greetings! My name is Gary and I plan to travel from San Luis Obispo, CA to SLO, CA circumnavigating the US in the process. I begin April 1st, 2012 (God willing and the creek don't rise). My planned route is following Adventure Cycling maps to San Diego, turning left and heading to St. Augustine, FL turning left and heading to Bah Habah, ME, left again to Portland, OR and then back along the coast to San Luis Obispo again. The rig is the most comfortable Catrike Expedition outfitted with custom racks by Cutter Designs (SLO) and Ortlieb recumbent panniers. Yes: I will have no butt when I am finished and hope to have released my views of the US and attained new ones. Here's to the viewing nation at 24 inches and 10 miles per hour! I currently cycle about 180 miles per week with a great group of friends from the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club, volunteer in my community in bicycle-related activities and others, just finished a term on the SLO Parks and Recreation Commission (the reason for starting this now and not earlier), and hope to express to my friends not traveling with me the experience of making this journey via this accounting. WooHOO! Oh the places we'll go!
2014 update: on the board now is a circumnavigation of the Rockies much the same as around the nation. This time there'll be more beer, hamburgers, muffins, coffee and laughs than before. I am joined by my good cycling buddy Michael Gille who is just now agonizing about what rig he'll take: trike or upright (he settled on the Salsa upright pulling a Radical Designs two-wheeled trailer). We'll head to San Diego, Wickenburg, Utah hills, Colorado hills, Wyoming hills, Canadian hills, Washington hills and those hills we are already familiar with, coastal hills and back to SLO. 100 days, 5800 miles and boatloads of descents. Stay tuned. We depart mid June and discover the heat, wet, cold, and insectile weather as we cycle.
