Hello and Welcome
I will be riding my bicycle across this great country of ours and I would like to invite you to journey with me and share in my adventures. This journal is meant for me to keep a record of what I see feel and experience and I will be glad to share this with all my friends, acquaintances and people interested in the bicycling who may be doing something similar in the future. This will be a supported tour so I think a lot of the technical things are not as important here as in other journals that are on "crazyguyonabike" but I will share what useful information I can.
Let me tell you who I am so you can "know where I'm coming from" as we used to say. I am a 56 year old woman whose whole world turned upside down about 2 years ago and I have been
on a quest to find myself and a new meaning in life. This trip is part of that search for answers. My background is that i am of Latin origin, my parents from Spain and Puerto Rico and I was raised in NYC speaking only spanish until I went to school. I moved to upstate NY as a child and graduated froma a small rural high school, and subsequently went to college in NY and medical school in Boston. I started riding bicycles in college and my first real bicycle was a Raleigh that cost $ 267 and lasted me for 20 years. I rode that bike to school and occasionally to work over the years. After getting amrried and having 2 children a girl and a boy (now 24 and 22) my husband and I ended up in Ponte Vedra Beach where I had a solo Internal Medic ine practice for ten years and then joined a 2 doctor office for the next ten years. I was an avid tennis player and then started riding my bicycle in group rides in the early 1990's doing our local MS150 rides every year. In 2005 my hhusband and I separated and I developed breast cancer and I had to retire from my practice. There were so many changes that year it was hard to keep up with them. I finished the chemotherapy after my surgery and then it took me much longer to get "better" than I thought it would. Actually, I am still recovering. I did a month long Yoga Training course in Costa Rica in January of this year and I was clearly not recovered by that time.
I think I am just short of being ready for this bike ride, but when I signed up to do it almost a year ago, I thought I would be fully recovered, but I am not, and I certainly am undertrained. I have been riding about 150 to 180 miles a week since middle of February and that is simply not enough miles.
So back to the reasons I am doing this trip. It's just something that I have wanted to do for a long time and now is the time. I hope to find out more about who I am and to talk to a lot also it is a big challange. i think you whould always challange yourself, keep yourself on the edge, have goals. I have achieved many of the goals I set out to achieve in my life and I hope to be able to complete this goal also. |
