I'm a PhD student (Environmental/Spatial Science) and Rover Scout from South Australia in Maverick Rover Crew.
A fellow Rover (Stephen Warren-Smith) and I are planning to ride from Adelaide, Australia, to Rinkaby Sweden, between October 30th 2010 and 27th July 2011. We are aiming to make it in time for the World Scout Jamboree to be held there.
Our steeds for the journey are recumbent trikes, built by Michael Rogan of MRRecumbents, Victoria, Australia:
Greenspeed GT3 Frame, chromoly, extra braze-ons on main tube under the seat (one on top for a large bidon, one on the side for a side access bidon). Handbuilt wheels from GS.
16" (349) wheels.
Fronts: Velocity Sims 36hole rims, Sturmey Archer Drum brakes, 14g spokes. Greenspeed Scorcher Tyres (will also use various Schwalbes, mainly Marathon).
Rear: Shimano XT Standard Hub, 36 hole, Velocity Sims Rim, 14g spokes. Greenspeed Scorcher Tyre (but will mostly use Schwalbe Marathons)
Cassette: Shimano HG40 8speed, 11-30T
Rear Deralleur: Shimano Acera to start with
Front Deralleur: Shimano Sora triple
Front Crankset: Driveline, with 30/40/52 chainrings
Bottom Bracket: TA, sealed replaceable cartridge bearings
Chain: SRAM PC830
Steering: Michael's own direct steering design, which has Ackerman compensation, and is quite strong and bullitproof. Also increases ground clearance over a normal GT3 NSR steering (which has 7cm, due to 16" wheels).
Rear Rack: Greenspeed Alloy (30kg rated, designed for these trikes).
Panniers: Ortleib Roll top plus, also have some cheap Vaudes for training.
Computer: Cateye Enduro 8 Heavy duty wire.
We are currently working on a website for the trip on the Scouts SA website, which will be a portal to our journal for the expedition here on CGOAB.
We are aiming to promote Scouting and adventurous activities amongst Scouts around the world.
