"Tropical rainforest, national parks, rare wildlife, 4,000-metre-high peaks, piping hot springs and stupendous beaches - very attractive stuff for a few weeks of R&R on a bike trip. We - that's Debbie and myself - felt the urge to get away 'somewhere' for our annual winter break aka Chinese New Year. Taiwan, where we live, becomes manic then: hotels are full (and charge double), all resorts are packed, roads jammed, trains overflowing and - in national holiday tradition - the weather usually turns dodgy. Sabah: it's safe, pretty close to Taiwan, doesn't really celebrate CNY, isn't frighteningly expensive, English is widely spoken, it boasts good weather and is linked with direct flights. It ticked a lot of boxes. We even had enough airmiles for free flights. Decision made..." - read this journal

Various theories surround the name but the information boards suggest that the island offshore was a prison until the 1930's & escapees perished in the process due to the sharks & crocodiles which once inhabited the channel, only bones were washed up. Well it's a good story.
