East to West across Canada then down to LA

"I never fancied doing the gap year, backpacking thing when I was younger. The thought of lugging a heavy rucksack round the world, going to the same tourist hotspots as thousands of other westerners just didn't appeal. However, since getting into cycling a whole new world has opened up. I love walking, but it takes you a long time to get anywhere. Cycling is perfect. You can cover a reasonable distance in a day, but stop when you want, look at things, talk to people. You're not shut off from your surroundings like when travelling by car. I went to a talk by Mark Beaumont, the round the world cycling world record holder, last week and he agreed. He kept talking about seeing the world at 'bike speed'. So I've taken a bold step and quit my job to head off out into the world on my bike. Call it a belated gap year if you like, or an early mid-life crisis!"
